Support groups are always facilitated by trained adult facilitators who are positive adult role models. Facilitators help the youth establish guidelines to keep their conversations focused and their relationships positive. This group is open to any youth between the age of 12 and 18 who is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, pansexual or allied (a person who supports all the others, but may identify as straight/heterosexual and/or cisgender.)
At YQSA, we have a code of confidence, where we respect each other and keep things that are said at meetings at the meetings. Facilitators keep all of your information confidential as well. The only exception is that if facilitators believe that someone's personal safety is in jeopardy, they have a legal obligation to report that.
Facilitators who run the support meetings aren’t there to be counselors or give advice; they are there to be role models and provide resources. Sometimes the most important thing adults can offer one of the youth attending our meetings is being there to listen because they may not have someone willing to do so at home or at school. Volunteers are always needed!
